 Part 2: Joseph Robert Davis (1858 - 1910)

Marriage to Mary Alice Smith

Joseph Robert Davis was born in Wexford, Ireland, 06 February 1858. He was the eldest son of Joseph Davis and Isabella Scully. He became a bank clerk and married twice, first to Mary Alice Smith 03 June 1880 in Toronto. Mary Alice was born in or around Runcorn, Cheshire, England, in 1858. Her parents were John Smith,  a physician, and Mary Darlington, and they had eight other children. By 1871, the family had emigrated to Ontario.

Marriage to Ada Margaret Craig

Mary Alice died of tuberculosis 29 November 1882, only a year after their marriage. Upon his second marriage, Joseph Robert declared himself a 'bachelor' rather than 'widower'. He married Ada Margaret Craig (1865 - 1953) in Toronto, 24 May 1886 and they had five children: Joseph, Reginald, Ada and twins 'Estelle' and 'Nettie'. Joseph later became an accountant and died in Toronto 26 January 1910, aged 51. Ada died 22 July 1953, aged 88.

Children of Joseph and Ada

Joseph Harold Davis (1887 - 1957) was known as 'Harold'. He was born 24 March 1887 in Toronto. He died 23 March 1957. Nothing else is known of him or his life except that he was a bank clerk when he was in his 20s.

Reginald Neville Craig Davis (1889 - 1915) was born 16 June 1889 in Toronto. He signed up 22 September 1914 as a Lieutenant and saw action with the 3rd Battalion Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment). He was killed in action 24 May 1915, aged 25, and his name is included on the Vimy Memorial in France.

More information about Ada Blanche Isabel Davis (1891 - 1982) appears in Part 3.

Twins Grace Estella Margaret 'Estelle' and Isabella Annette Creighton (known as 'Nettie') were born 15 January 1904 in Toronto. Nettie married Charles Pringle.

Estelle was known as 'Little Aunt Stel' to avoid confusion with her mother's sister Stella Craig who was 'Big Aunt Stella'. Estelle married Dr Edgar (Ed) Briggs Sisley. Ed was possibly a dentist who liked to paint and was a member of the Canadian Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. Only a few pieces of work are known about (having appeared in auction catalogues in recent years): 'Teammates' (an etching, possibly 1947) and 'St James'(?), another etching, date unknown.
