Part 6: Lydia Gough (1861 - 1946)

Lydia Gough was the eldest child of Charles Gough and Ann Bullock. She was born 22 January 1861 in Hempsted, Gloucestershire. She worked as a dressmaker most of her life and was one of the rare brides who declared her occupation on her marriage record. She married mechanic Joseph Pugh (1858 - 1919) 12 May 1883 in Hempsted Parish Church and they had eight children: Selina, Ernest, Herbert, Lydia, Frank, Sydney, Edith and Arthur. (More information about Joseph and their children can be found in the Pugh section.)

The family lived mainly in Gloucester but spent time in the late 1880s and 1890s living in Cardiff, Wales, probably because Joseph was able to find work there. When they  returned to Gloucester they lived at 6 Cecil Road. After Joseph’s death in 1919, Lydia continued to live in the family home with youngest son Arthur. She did also spend time with her daughter Lydia Ella in her home in Surrey. Lydia died 22 December 1946 at 9 Lily Street, West Bromwich, a terraced house that might have been the home of one of her children. She was 85 at the time and suffering from myocarditis, bronchitis and arteriosclerosis. She was buried 28 December at Hempsted Parish Church.
