Part 4: Joseph Gough Jr (c1797 - 1852)

Working life and marriage to Lydia

Joseph Gough was baptised 30 August 1797 in Maisemore. He was the third child of Joseph Gough Sr and Elizabeth Etheridge. He worked as an agricultural labourer, like his father and about 10% of the population. He never had any education though his younger brother managed to learn at some point. Joseph married Lydia (surname unknown, c1789 - c1872) and they lived in Hempsted, an agricultural village next to the Gloucester canal, just southwest of Gloucester city itself. It is not certain where Lydia was born. On different census records her place of birth was listed as 'Churcham' and 'Cranham' (which were villages on opposite sides of Gloucester). Joseph and Lydia had three children: Mary, Charles and James.

Unlike his father and grandfather who lived to 85 and 90 respectively, Joseph Jr died 12 May 1852, aged 54, from problems with his heart: hypertrophy (an enlargement possibly due to high blood pressure) and pericarditis (inflammation around the heart). He was buried four days later at St Swithun’s Church, Hempsted. Lydia continued to live in the family home with her son Charles and his family and also a grandson, Daniel, who had been with them since birth. When Charles moved, she went with them as she was now a pauper and deaf. She died c1872, aged 82.

Children of Joseph and Lydia

Mary (c1828 - ?) was born c1828 in Hempsted. It is fairly certain that she had three illegitimate children: Daniel, Julia and William Alfred. Daniel was brought up with his grandparents and Julia spent some time in her early years with another family. By 1871, Mary and her family had moved to Birmingham (most likely because of employment opportunities for her eldest son) and she described herself as a ‘widow’ on subsequent census records. She died sometime after 1901.

More information about Charles (c1832 – 1881) appears in Part 5.

James (c1834 - ?) was born c1834 in Hempsted. There is no confirmed record of him after 1841.

Next: Charles Gough
