Tippett family

* * *

Part 1: William Tippett (? - ?)

The earliest known Tippett was William Tippett (? - ?). He was married to Mary (surname unknown) (? - ?). It is not known what occupation William had or where they lived, although all their children were baptised at St George’s Church, Modbury, Devon so it is most likely they lived in Modbury. William and Mary had five known children: William, Joan, Henry, Elizabeth and Hannah. Nothing else is known of William and Mary.

Children of William and Mary

William (c1754 - ?) was baptised 27 January 1754 at St George’s Church. It is not known what happened to him.

Joan (c1757 - ?) was baptised 13 February 1757 at St George’s Church. It is not known what happened to her.

More information about Henry (c1758 - 1817) appears in Part 2.

Elizabeth (c1761 - ?) was baptised privately 09 September 1761 and the event recorded in the St George’s Church parish register. It is not known why she was baptised privately as none of her siblings were. [1] It is not known what happened to her.

Hannah (c1766 - ?) was baptised 23 February 1766 at St George’s Church. It is not known what happened to her.

Next: Henry Tippett

Footnotes

[1] Various reasons put forward by genealogists for the existence of private baptisms (in the absence of explanations from religious organisations or academics): the child was sickly and not expected to live until the following Sunday service (when baptisms took place), there were no suitable godparents available, or as a sign of wealth and status.
