Part 4: Annie Smith (c1865 - 1905)

Annie Smith was the only daughter of Sidney Smith and Sarah Hannah Jagger. She was born c1865 in the Halifax area. By the time she was 15, she had become a dressmaker’s apprentice. When she was about 18, she became pregnant and gave birth to daughter Amelia, named after her grandmother (more information about Amelia appears in Part 5). No one knows who the father was. They lived with her parents until she married Abraham Schofield Turner (1861 - 1915) 27 July 1898 (more information about him appears in the Turner section). As was common, she did not state she had any occupation on her marriage certificate or census record afterwards, but it is likely she continued to do some dressmaking, especially if it was necessary to supplement the family income. Annie was 33 at her marriage, which was a decade above the average age for single women to marry. [1] However, Abraham was a widower with a child and now that both his parents (with whom he had been living) had died, finding a new wife was probably important for him!

Annie and Abraham had two children: Josephine, born 1900, and Sidney, born 1905. (More information about them appears in the Turner section). A month after Sidney’s birth, Annie died 08 September, the cause being apoplexy. An inquest was held, probably because the death was quite sudden.
