Part 4: Ada Mitchell (1863 - 1932)

Ada Mitchell, sometimes referred to as ‘Ida’, was born 18 December 1863 in White Gate, Southowram, one of twelve children born to James Bentley Mitchell and Elizabeth Lord. After she finished her schooling, Ada worked as a worsted winder and reeler. She married Alfred Womersley 14 November 1896 at St John’s Wesleyan Chapel in Halifax. Ada was almost 33 at the time of her marriage (although she stated it was 31 in the register), which was a decade above the mean age for single women marrying for the first time in the 1890s. Alfred was 31 himself which was six year above the mean for single men. [1] Ada and her other unmarried sister Martha Ann had been living with their parents for many years but with the death of their father only a few months earlier, perhaps Ada felt she was free to marry.

Ada and Alfred had two children: Muriel (1898 - 1972) and Harold (1902 - 1986). (More information about them appears in the Womersley section.) Ada died at their home in Thornton Street, Halifax, 20 March 1932, aged 68, from bronchitis and emphysema. She was buried 23 March in the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, King Cross, in grave plot 259, section D.
