 Part 1: Charles Henderson (c1794 - 1856)

Marriage to Lillias Kirkwood

Charles Henderson was born c1794. There is a record of a Charles Henderson christened 05 January 1794 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland, son of John Henderson and Alison Grinlay and this may be him. Charles married Lillias Kirkwood January 1819 in Dunipace Parish Church (Church of Scotland). The village of Dunipace is situated between Stirling and Falkirk in Stirlingshire, Scotland.

Lillias Kirkwood was the second oldest child of James Kirkwood and Bruce Douglass. (The use of 'Bruce' as a female name was carried on for a couple more generations.) Lillias was born 14 February 1795 in Dunipace. Charles and Lillias had five known children: Bruce (a daughter), John, Alison, Margaret and James.

Emigration to Canada

Charles emigrated to Canada in 1838 and James followed in either 1840 or 1842. It is not known when the rest of the family came. The Hendersons settled in Welland County, Ontario. After spending three years in Chippawa, the family moved to Crowland Township. Charles died 17 November 1856 and Lillias 23 March 1859. Many of the Henderson family were buried in Doan's Ridge Cemetery, Section D, and their graves can be viewed on findagrave.com.

 Children of Charles and Lillias

Bruce (1819 - 1895) was born in 1819 in Scotland. Although the name 'Bruce' is now usually associated with males, this Bruce was female. She married John Grindley and they had five daughters: Lillias, born in 1842, Ellison (known as Elsie and born c1844), Bruce Douglass (born c1845), Mary Janet (born 1848) and Ellen R (born c1850). John probably died before 1861 and Bruce 15 November 1895.

John (1821 - 1937) was born in January 1821 in Scotland. He married Catherine Jane Seger who had been born in Crowland 18 October 1823. They had six children, Charles H (1852 - 1856), William (born and died in 1854), John Kirkwood (1857 - 1937), Sarah Lillias (1860 - 1957), Jane Ann (known as 'Jennie') (1863 - 1913) and Margaret B (known as 'Maggie') (1868 - 1966). Jennie and Maggie married brothers Lewis Balfour and John Allen Zavitz respectively while Sarah never married. John Senior died 20 August 1876 and Catherine 1892. It was son John Kirkwood who took over the running of the family farms located just south-east of the town itself. He had fifty acres of land that bordered William Brookfield and E.W. Brookfield, which probably contained the family home. On the other side of E.W. Brookfield, were two seventy-five acre lots owned by John and Alem Bender. John Kirkwood would later marry Alem’s daughter Emma on 11 June 1884. They had three children, Belle, Effie and Hugh John. John Kirkwood died in 1937 and Emma 1942.

Alison (c1822 - ?) was born c1822. It is likely she died in infancy or married young as she does not appear with the family on any census.

Margaret (c1825 - ?) was born c1825. It is likely she died in infancy or married young as she does not appear with the family on any census.

More information about James (1827 - 1913) appears in Part 2. [1]

Next: James Henderson
