 Part 4: William Edgar Raney (1859 - 1933)

 

Marriage to Jessie Amelia Fraser and legal career

The Hon. William Edgar Raney K.C. was the son of Herman Raney and Mary Jemima Cramer. He was born 08 December 1859 in Ontario, Canada, and married Jessie Amelia Fraser 29 December 1886 in Toronto. He was a journalist for a short time in Maine, USA, and Kingston, Ontario, before going to Trinity College (now part of the University of Toronto) where he studied law. He was called to the bar and became a King's Counsel in 1906. He won a provincial by-election as a member of the ruling United Farmers of Ontario party and was appointed the Attorney General c1919. He became well-known for his opposition to gambling and upholding prohibition laws. When the government was defeated, he led the opposition until 1927 when he resigned following his appointment to the Supreme Court of Ontario.

William died 24 September 1933, aged 73, and was buried at Riverside Cemetery, Etobicoke, Ontario. Jessie died in 1943.
